A MONSTER
Crash, boom,
Bang and zoom
Every sound
Comes crashing down
Run up the flight of stairs
Kick down the door
There is my little girl
Pounding on the floor
“What is it? What is it?”
I ask, racing to her side
“Daddy, I did it!”
Her little voice cried
I examine her from head to torso to knee
I look for anything—anything—that’s in need
Everything looks whole
“What happened?” I say
“Daddy, I just made
A bad monster go away”
I look around and notice her little fists on the wooden floor
I look around but see traces of the mysterious person or silhouette to be no more
“Buttercup, what are you talking about?” I ask
“Buttercup, tell me, what did you see?”
She points to a spider crawling away to a wall
“That monster was trying to attack me”
With a chuckle on my lips and amusement in my heart
I calmly explain to her, that monster didn’t call for action so sharp
She looks between me and the spider in bewilderment
As she realizes what she scared, must not have been a “monster” to begin with
“Am I a monster now, too, Daddy?”
She asks, delicate as can be
I scoop her in my arms with a chuckle
Look down and say, “That could never be.”
